McDonald's recalls 12 million Shrek glasses

My first thought was that these glasses had to have been made in China, but it turns out...

So to recap, McDonald's got a company to make glasses that meet the standards of state and local laws, those glasses passed inspection by a lab accredited by a consumer safety group, the same consumer safety group says the glasses don't pose any toxic risk, the same consumer group doesn't have standards for cadmium levels, but it's thinking that maybe it will set a particular standard sometime in the future, and these glasses are just slightly above that proposed standard. Oh, and that proposed standard is "highly protective."

So why are the glasses being recalled? What a boondoggle!

It'd probably be healthier to let the kids keep the glasses, but not let them eat the food.

Exactly. I'm sure McD's isn't going to blurt out China and risk being forcibly re-educated by one of their biggest growing markets.

After all, aren't most US "based" companies manufacturing overseas?

I looked it up and the glasses are made in New Jersey, but no one wants to say where the cadmium based paint comes from:

I remember some NFL themed glasses distributed along with your fill-ups from either Shell or Texaco that got recalled back in the 70s, for high lead content in the white paint used on the exterior only. Even the dumb kids don't lick the outside of the glasses.

Makes me wonder what might be lurking (other than dust) on my 1960s moon mission glasses, or the Muppet and Star Wars glasses that I got in a variety of fast food promotions.

Isn't Cadmium a component of that really nice deep red color?

And, as a matter of course, it is unwise to trust anything from New Jersey.

And cadmium selenite was used in the manufacture of The famed Agfa Portriga Rapid photographic enlarging paper. It was a sad day when that was discontinued.
