September 13, 2011 Ground Zero Ship

As workers were clearing Ground Zero they came upon a great surprise. It was the stern of an 18th century ship that had been sunk long ago in the Hudson River.

It had probably been sunk on purpose, as they found evidence of worms in the wood.

Beneath the ship, they found the jaw and teeth of an ancient horse or cow. Around the ship they found pieces of decorative tile. The theory is that this was a general dumping ground before it was filled with dirt to extend the land.

I wonder what secrets are lying under all the other buildings?

From the title, I assumed this would be a thread about the USS New York, which was built with steel salvaged from the WTC.

Imagine what we find in this country when digging out foundations!?
Viking longships and Roman burial pits and all sorts.

Big business rules of course, and it barely delays progress. But if a company is large enough to have an eye on PR they will often preserve something like a Roman mosaic for the public to view. We're spoiled of course - like Egyptians using stones from the pyramids, or Romans using marble from temples.
