If you're going to try the Mozilla mail program as well, I would wait for the stable 1.3 to come out (in a couple of weeks or so?) as it implements the Bayesian filtering algorithm (see http://paulgraham.com/spam.html).

If you're just interested in the browser, version 1.2.1 works just fine.

Shepps and I were talking about it yesterday. I was listening to the Kojo Nnamdi show on WAMU-FM (Washington, DC's main NPR station) on Thursday. He had a guy on that was talking about web browsers...how NS has pretty much tanked at this point, how MS has no "desire" to update IE at the moment, and about the various browsers out there.

I love using NS for the mail and NG client, but that's all I really use it for these days. I've been using IE straight for over a year, and while it isn't bad, I'd like to try something different.

I forgot about the system requirements. OTOH I used early versions for a year on a P3-500 and it was just fine and that was before many performance improvements.

I have a 233MHz MMX and Mozilla 1.2.1 runs well on it. Well, it did once I removed the system resources vampire that is McAfee Antivirus. And I upgraded the memory sometime back--that helps too.

Have you considered using Opera? I use it occasionally, especially when my IE decides to crap out on me. (Makes it difficult to download and install files when your browser is having issues)

I'm not sure of the website, but I think it's www.opera.com.

i snagged my copy of opera off either downloads.com (which was SOOO Much better before cnet ate it up) or tucows.com.

When my boyfriend was having browser issues, he could at least get yahoo messenger to work, which had file transfer capabilities, and I was able to get him back in business by sending it to him that way.

I use Opera 5 on OS9, and it's kinda starting to irritate me. It's reasonably speedy/nonfucky, but isn't hugely kind to other things running, particularly while rendering a page. I guess there's always iCab.

Opera has a lot of nice features that no other browser has.

Two examples are a checkbox to kill pop-ups and a one-click private data killer (zaps ALL history/cookies/cache/everything).

And you can internalize multiple windows (they are tabbed and labeled). There are ways to program mouse clicks to surf just by clicking but I haven't bothered to learn them.

I run it at work but without installing it - I just copied the files into a folder, set the proxy server/firewall settings and launch away. There are many privacy advantages to running it in an "un-installed" mode.

Phoenix actually has all those features, though not right from the get go, you do need to install a couple extentions. Not saying it's better just letting you know.
