I'll take 6 HPs and 3 SWs, and forget the rest.

LOL. It's hard to believe they have been making Bond movies for 50 years.

The first books my Dad ever read for pleasure (being dyslexic and pretty poorly schooled) were James Bond books. A co-apprentice lent him Dr No with the promise of sex scenes, and Dad - a horny 19 yo with no other options - ploughed through it in hope. Only to find he loved the action and the style as much as the exy-sexy.

It's not Fleming's first James Bond book of course, but it was the first film, and remains Dad's favourite.

I can relate to that. Goldfinger is my favorite movie & soundtrack. BTW, Adele sings Skyfall and it is great!

Didn't they wring eight movies out of Harry Potter?

(ashamed to know that).

It's also 50 years since the Beatles first single was released and 50 years since the Rolling Stones' first live gig.

Shit, eh?

I used to live in San Bernardino, the site of the Rolling Stones' first US concert. They played the Swing Auditorium at the Orange Show Fairgrounds. That was before my time, but I did see some great acts there, including The Eurythmics and Jethro Tull. It's long gone now though.

Good grief, he must have been really horny, the Bond books are tedious at best. You know in the movie when Bond would go up to the door, gun in hand, listen for a second, then open the door? Well in the books you get pages of description on the style of the door casing, the engraving on the knob, the shape of the keyhole, and the umpteenth description of the Walther PPK.

Then he just glosses over the sex.

I'd watch one star wars and a handful of bond.

The rest should be lit on fire and danced around.

This is the thing though, he read them on the promise of steamy sex, and discovered that there were books that could be read for the sheer enjoyment of reading. I mean he also ploughed through The Lord of the Rings, and Tolkein can be quite turgid. And not in a good way.

I read a list a few years back, of books to encourage teenage boys to read.
I wondered whether I should get some of them for my nephew, if he continued to be a reluctant reader (he has).
Now I know it would do no good - he gets everything he needs from other sources. I'm looking at you, internet.

Shame - I'd have loved to be the cool Aunty who introduced him to the Guy N Smith books about killer crabs...

I was a pretty voracious reader when I discovered the Bond books and it was all I could do to not throw them out the damn window.
Ah, that's it. If you're not a reader, you keep plugging along figuring all books are like that.
