Old Shows you Loved

A show I watched obsessively in my 20s has recently had a dvd release (paid for by the comedians themselves not the BBC :P) and therefore also made its way onto Youtube.

It was called This Morning With Richard not Judy and starred Richard Herring and Stewart Lee - two of my favourite standups.

The title and format were a pastiche of a popular show at the time called This Morning with Richard and Judy - presented by married couple Richard and Judy. Very anodyne morning tv fayre. TMWRNJ followed a similar format but completely subverted it and also added sketches. I and everybody I knew made a date for this on a Sunday morning.

Here's the first show in full - it takes about 5 mins to get funny but the humour builds. In later shows the repetition and building on jokes and setups becomes part of the humour; as this is the first show it's where a lot of that gets set up.

I always loved the way what starts out as general wackiness slowly reveals Herring to be a complete sexual deviant in every possible sense. Which was something of a recurring theme of the early Lee and Herring stuff as well.
