03/12/03: Week 11

We had decided on naming the kid 'Dalton' if it's a boy. But Kathy decided she didn't like it. So we've changed our boy name to 'Dante'. No thoughts yet on what the middle name would be. Interestingly, most people under about 35 think this is a really good name, and most people over about 35 think it's the worst name they've ever heard. It's fun to hear their reactions. Both our moms absolutely hate it, of course. My own mom refused to say that she hated it, but I know she does. Why can't she just be honest? But I think we're pretty set on it, so I guess they'll have to get used to it.

We went to the doctor last Monday. We didn't actually see a doctor, just a nurse (I'm not complaining, though. The RN was adequate and very informative). She asked us a whole slew of questions about what diseases and/or medical problems people in our family had. And she told us a whole bunch of stuff we needed to know. What to expect, what's normal, and that sort of thing. We were told that Kathy is 11 weeks along, and that the estimated due date is September 30th. Then, we went downstairs and they took some of her pee and some of her blood, and we went home!

We go back this Friday, where I think we'll actually get to see a doctor. I also believe we'll get to see the results of the tests and will attempt hear the baby's heartbeat with a doppler device. I'm looking forward to this. I think it will be very interesting.

I need to call my mom up and start filling her in on what's going on. She's been helping deliver babies as an RN pretty much every day for a long time. It's like picking up the mail for her, and she knows all the ins-and-outs. I want her and the doctor to work together as much as possible on this. I know that she'll look after our interests, and I know that she'll understand all the technical mumbo-jumbo. I don't want to step on the doctor's toes, though. So I've got to find the right balance.

It will be necessary for you to purchase at least one scary book regarding pregnancy week by week ... this will give you and your spouse a set of unrealistic benchmarks that she has no ability to meet so that you come to understand your inadequacies.

You should also watch at least one birthing video outside of the context of the LaMaze classes. Don't bother making popcorn. You'll lose your appetite. ;)

Be prepared -- what you'll hear won't sound like an adult human heartbeat -- instead it will sound (in my opinion) like a horse trotting while simultaneously wheezing; "WHOCK-a, WHOCK-a, WHOCK-a . . ." at about 150 BPM.
