05/09/03: Mother's Day

Well, this Sunday is not only Mother's day, it's also my wedding anniversary! Kathy and I both requested Saturday and Sunday off, so we're spending Saturday with our mothers and Sunday with each other. One weekend of joyous celebration. :)

In typical guy tradition, I have yet to get either of them anything. I've never really gotten my mom anything more than a card, mostly because I never remember these obscure holidays and she never makes any effort at all to remind me of it. She cares enough about it to try to guilt me afterwards, of course. Yet she never cares enough to mention it beforehand. Yeah, yeah, I'm an evil man, blah blah. Well, now that I have a wife to remind me of dates, I have some notice time to work with. Even though I pissed most of it away in laziness this time.

I know that my mom likes gardening, and I thought about getting her some sort of obscure plant or seed or something. But I don't really know anything about it. It all sounds really lame to me, even though I know she likes it. It's sort of like her buying computer stuff for me. Without some sort of consultation with an expert, it's bound to be stupid and useless.

We also like neat little useful electronic gadgets in my family. Whenever the next new big thing comes out on the market, it's inevitably given as a holiday gift. I don't have that much money, this time, though, so I can't really go this route.

I've got to think of something clever and thoughful, yet inexpensive.

So does anyone have any good ideas for Mothers day presents? I figure you guys are all at least 10% more thoughtful than I am. What did you get your mothers? What did you get your significant others on your anniversaries?

wiat until the kid comes along. casey, her mother, my mother, and grandmothers on both sides are getting pictures. i took him to old navy, picked out a couple outfits, took him to "kiddie kandids" (a photography place in the mall here) and got a bunch of pictures. hallmark has cards. 3 stores, 2 hours and almost no work later i have gifts for everyone. i even got some of him in a basketball outfit, so fathers day is covered too.

Wow.. I always thought of pictures as being "freely given". I guess that could work, though! If someone gave me pictures, I'd feel cheated. I'm not my mother, though. I bet she'd fall for it.

What I mean to say is, that's a good idea that I never would have thought of. :)

well, they also get taken out to dinner, spoiled rotten and whatnot, so its not like all they get is pictures. but they sure go all googly-eyed over them, so i figure if they like it, why not? ill probably end up buying at least one nice frame for each of them, because i do admit, its kind of cheap.

Whatever you do ... NO APPLIANCES!!!

It's a shame you've already announced the impending little Juju to the family ... would have been a great hoot if you were to get your and her mom's both grandmom frames with a copy of the ultrasound picture ... actually you could still do that.

Gift of fine jewelry and floral offering always works. Presenting said flowers upon a breakfast tray delivered by your fine self also wins points.

We always send flowers to my and my wife's mothers--a cliche, but they always seem to be appreciated. And it's not too late to order!

I bought my mom a card and called her on the appropriate day. My kids mom, on the other hand, I bought a gift for. A pack of her preffered cigarettes. I was going for classy.
Well, realisticaly I let the kids pick out one card each and a little something extra. (Rochere chocolate whatever and a bag of Milano cookies) So I guess she did get something out of me so that the kids could feel good about it. Go figure.

Well, I ended up getting my mom one of those "Memory fill-in-the-blank" books. It's written for Grandma to fill out and give to the baby when it gets older. It was actually my wife's idea. For some reason women go ga ga over these. Then I also got her a dozen roses for good measure. :)
