I need help with my router

I have DSL. I use a router ( netgear ) to connect 2 computers to the dsl line and each other. It worked fine for a long time, and then all of the sudden, I was no longer able to send email or connect to many(not all) websites....
I took the router out of the loop and went straight from the dsl to this computer, and the problems disapeared.

help!

Of course you tried the universal fix...

Down all devices...

Bring up DSL. Make sure it comes up fully.

Bring up the netgear

Bring up the machines...

This works for me when I get the glitchies....

I am assuming that DSL is not using authntication and is using gets its address automatically. If it is using authentication (like PPPoE), make sure your netgear is set up correctly . Your manual will show you how to do it...

I am also assuming that netgear router's default address does not conflict with the DSL's safe side. (It might) It should indicate this error on startup (hopefully)

I also assume your computers pick their own IP's from the netgears server...

I hope that helps.

First try going in to the router setup. Look at all the parameters to see if they make sense.

If you still have problems, you can try resetting the router to factory defaults. This analogous to reinstalling windows, so you should try other options first.

In the mean time, since your router is no longer protecting you, you should install Zone Alarm or some other software firewall. Lots of nasty virii out there these days. And its no longer the case that you have to download something to get em.

We had a power surge at work Wednesday night...blew out one of our routers...network was down over an hour...wound up going home early in disgust.

I'm sorry...I have nothing to add except to say I sympathize, Jimbo. I'm not a big fan of routers right now.

My last router failed in a real interesting way. It still functioned as a hub, in that all my computers could talk to each other, but access to Internet was sporadic, and finally failed altogether, but still while allowing the LAN portion behind the router to function.

Replaced router, problem solved.
