Dumb Ads

I've seen a number of the Microsoft "We see" print ads. On the whole I thought they were ok in a bland corporate "yay us" kind of way. But the latest one I ran across made me snort and think "What twits!".

It's not quite so obvious in this small version but keep an eye out for the two-page print ads. Most people don't strum a bass - or chord one either.

Normally this sort of goof doesn't bother me. I'm a programmer and there can be all sorts of outrageously bad computer stuff in TV programs and movies and it doesn't phase me.

Maybe it's the whole "We understand you." theme and then this.

I get National Geographic Magazine. On the outside back cover for a few months now, there has been a car ad. Picture of an SUV out in the desert somewhere, driving down some rock hill. Almost tipping over, but looking really rugged and macho while doing it. The text is "No intelligent life out here. Just you." I know it's supposed to be a reference to Star Trek and the reader is supposed to get the feeling that if only they had this SUV they would be able to go out into the hinterlands of some exotic planet and drive down cliffs.

I read it and immediately think that it means "No intelligent life out here, including you (if you buy this SUV and drive it down rock cliffs.)"

The girl's got to have a gimmick to get 3 gold and 3 platinum.

Also it would take real talent to strum a bass with painted fingernails, never mind fretting one. But playing through a guitar amp, that's pretty much normal.

You mean a 240-lb man in a butterfly suit and inline skates doesn't induce you to switch to MSN? I wish I'd been able to get in on that; they were paying good money.

This is also the same company running "Where do you want to go today?" ads while the music in the background contained the lines "The damned and accursed are convicted to the flames of Hell" (in Latin).

I do so love it when the ad agency has a hell of a sense of humor and the client has no clue.

No kidding. They see "3 gold, and 3 platimum." We see 3 chipped nails and one bleeding index finger.

The big magnet in her amp probably isn't doing the computer any good, either.
