This sounds like more fun than mortals ought to be allowed to have!

Sounds a little like the warehouse raves that used to go on in the South of England in the early 90's heheheh People would be driving down motorways to some clandestine destination which they were only informed of an hour or so before embarking and would be looking out for people heading to the same gig. On one memorable occassion the partygoers had been driving around for ages unable to find the place when someone spotted it in a field alongside the motorway......Cars slewed to a halt ( very little traffic at that time of night ) and were left parked in the motorway as the partygoers buggered off on foot to the huge hangar ......Needless to say it got busted :P

Els, you gotta figure out how to rig a screen, maybe on the old backstop, on your field of dreams, you wrote so eloquently about.
The site says Westchester, PA, which is spittin' distance for many of us.

I'm pretty damn intrigued by this concept, I must admit. My wife and I already host a few fellow Pagans (and our very good token Christian friend, Robert) once a month for "Pagan Movie Night" here in our extremely modest hovel...er...home.

It strikes me how cool it could be to expand this concept to be more inclusive of the community as a whole.

Of course, if I had access to a decent quality LCD video projector, I might never *leave* my house.

I'm really loving this idea, and if they do it anywhere in/near west chester, I'm up for it.

I have a friend who does something like this in his development. He has always been a big movie buff, and has a 16mm projector. At least once or twice during the summer he rigs a large screen against their house, has all the neighbors over, and runs stuff from his collection. (He's such a buff he is part owner of a movie theater down in St. Kitts (I think that's where it is, anyway)).

Beware of the men in black...

...jackets, that is. With "MPAA" written on the back. Seriously; doing this is a felony punishable by 5 years of Pauly Shore movies.

I happened to be at a park last year with my son, and as we were getting ready to leave, a crowd began to gather, and a truck pulled up. The truck was about the size of one of those Coca Cola delivery trucks that have the roll up doors all over them. it was all rigged (professionally) up to play movies to crowds. a big screen on one side, with speaker arrays that extended out on poles....it was pretty far out. they were showing Stuart Little for the kids. for free. the township had sponsored it. i thought that was pretty cool.

I am reasonably certain that you can show a legally purchased film to anyone you want as long as you do not charge for it.

That's what I think, too. Also legally rented in addition to purchased.

You'd be wrong. Public performance is one of the exclusive rights of the copyholder, and that's what you're violating. The only thing that varies according to whether you charge for it is how easy it is to construe it as a felony rather than a civil action.

there are some weird laws that allow certain public performances too. my church has a "movie in the park" night one saturday every month. we do the whole barbecue, popcorn, games, etc thing for the neighborhood so it is fun. there are usually 50 or so from the church and another 150-200 that just live around there and bring their kids out. they always show some kids movie, like Finding Nemo, The Grinch , etc...

anyway, we can do it as long as it isn't announced in any way what movie will be played, right up until the time they press the "play" button.

What about in bars? Are they ripe for retribution?
