Something I Don't See Everyday

As I was getting ready for work this morning, I looked out the back door and saw an unusual sight. On our dog trolley cable was a small, rotund little bird, sitting quietly. It took me a moment to realize what I was seeing, because, well...you don't usually see these critters sitting quietly.

I got two pics before it flew the short distance over to the feeder. Kinda neat seeing a hummingbird at rest, huh?

Sorry for the picture quality (or lack thereof). Our digital camera is a first generation Sony disk camera, and I was shooting through two layers of filthy door glass.

I'd say that's a great picture considering the tiny size of those birds. Plus, like you said, you don't usually see them sitting still. Most of the pictures I've seen of hummingbirds are just a blur of flapping wings and a beak.

Good shot, a real rare sighting.

Oh,...and have the window washer flogged.

I think I almost like the second shot better than the first. Pure serendipity allowed me to get the creature just as it revved up its wings for takeoff, but while it was still sitting on the cable.

Do you have a hummingbird feeder or is this a surprise visit?

Or - Maybe it has a thing for your dog?

No, we've got a feeder. We get quite a few, I just don't ever see them sitting around calmly. They even feed on the wing for the most part.
