Yeah, I managed an upgrade this afternoon. Not many changes. I'm going to comment out the list of who's browsing each forum... that's just silly.

And I didn't realize until today that the usual "C"s had been overwritten by the vBulletin-standard "V"s. The image got cached on my browser and never left. Everything's back now, so shift-reload.

OK, but there is one interesting change, and that is the expanded "who's online" bit, which you can reach from the "forum jump" navigation at the bottom of each thread list. If you tell the system that you want to be visible, you'll show up in that list, and there's more information available there than there was before.

Looks alright to me. If it adds anything to the system, then cool.
Which reminds me - what kinda rig is the Cellar running on? It would be cool to know ![]() |

It's on an older P3-500 and shares duty with many other things, including DNS, email, other web sites.

We've got quite a few posts here and whatnot. How much space does the Cellar take up?
New software, aka "Tony and Dave's thread!" Our server in MS is a Dual Celery 533. 15,000 RPM Seagate SCSI. 256 Em-Bee's of this RAM thing (what is an Em-Bee? I hear all these computer guys talking about them all the time and what is that?). It works as a gameserver, email, dns, ftp, sshd & httpd server. Wahoo. We have about 3 trillion websites there, but it works well. Not much needed for a good little webserver. When you need a new system for it, let us know - I can buy the processor or something, other people can make donations... amazing what you can get for $500 nowadays ![]() |

The Cellar web site takes up very little space. All of the database is 16 megs - that's all the posts, users, etc. The site's directory takes about 30 megs not including the database, but that includes a backup of itself (don't ask), 16 megs of pictures, and the entire Cellar mark 4 which lived for a year before this version.
I am thinking of rebuilding the system upon which it lives, not because it needs more power (after all, the P3-500 managed the fark invasion), but because the age of commodity hardware means that two active years of duty is about as long as I trust the components in this box. Asking for a donation for it is really a foreign concept to me. I just couldn't. The Cellar takes so little to manage; I should think it would run just as well if it had a dedicated Pentium 90 with a 20 gb IDE drive. The connectivity bill is what kills me, at $1500/month. No donations would even make a dent in that, but it's paid for via the other work I do, and the Cellar takes a tiny percentage of all the connectivity. The words that we write are its real value, its only value, and in that you've donated quite a bit, dham... no complaints, man, but you don't have to be the latest poster on EVERY forum! |

Heh.
I don't post to have the last on every forum. I just usually have something to clarify or say. Go look at IotD - I didn't post last on that one ![]() ![]() sycamore done ruined this thread man... ![]() I think jaggy would spell okay if he could type ![]() Anyway. I know how it's weird asking for donations - I don't generally let anyone pay for stuff for me (partly because I make more money anyway so it's kinda silly, and largely because it just feels weird). But the Cellar is something I'd feel cool donating to (hardware-wise - I can't pay a connectivity bill, but like I said, I can buy a processor or a hard drive here and there). It's something that I really cherish. I've only been posting here for less than six months, but I've been reading it since March or April or so. It's a community that I really like, even if I probably scare off a few people here and there and occasionally (erm, maybe more frequently than that) rip into someone. This is my favorite spot on the web. I come here more than anywhere else now. It's the first spot I hit when I get to work in the morning, and it's the first spot I hit when I get home. If I can every do anything to help guarantee that it's going to be here, then I will. That's why I want to donate - because it means a lot to me, and I appreciate it. I want it to be here tomorrow. |

'Preciate it, but y'know, there just isn't a need right now!
I'd wager there would be a need, at some point... but my crystal ball is broken. And anyway, even the connectivity is kinda sorta wrong. If I were to do this on the cheap, I'd co-locate a server somewhere with even better connectivity, and I'd wind up paying less. But my T is here for the long haul; I signed up on a long contract to get the payments down. You know what we could all go in on? Advertising. Not expensive marketing crap, but things like classifieds on Fark and whatnot. I always said I would keep Cellar running no matter what, as long as people were interested in it. |

Well. We could do that. Or we could look at the text-only ads on Google or something - those are pretty cheap. And it's targeted advertising.
The other option is to get people posting other places a lot with links to the Cellar in their .signature's... Most of the people that are here now are here from slashdot, I figger... or at least, most of those I know. I realize a lot are here from the way way old days. But it's certainly something that works. Look at jaguar - he came from Slashdot, and we can't get rid of him. ![]() |
