The Nikon Coolpix 995 is dead

After nearly four years, it just couldn't take it anymore. It may be good for novelty shots, but that's about it. Let's celebrate with some of the last pix from my old friend:

Ahhh tis a pity. Syc's right, NBN probably blew the lens off. But the little gadget certainly gave yeoman's service over the years. I'd have to say this one is my favorite (the first woman, not the second). I'll raise a martini to its memory tonight.

It had too many beers spilled on it, and got dropped a few too many times. It <i>was</i> a good camera. I think I got my money's worth out of it.

The 8800 looks nice, but I'm sad that Nikon is moving away from the split body/swivel lens cameras. The 995 was great for shooting from very high or very low angles. I have so many pictures of my kids from their height, and I didn't have to lie down on the floor to take them. You just hold the camera down low, and tilt the screen so you can frame properly. It was also great for shooting above all the heads in a crowd and being able to see what you were zooming in on.

I guess they were too funny looking and the public didn't want them. That body style was far superior to the standard traditional camera style.

Well, the 8800 does have a swivel monitor, so it should be able to do the same kind of shots.

One thing about the 995 was that the plastic body seemed flimsy. It was very light, which also made it susceptible to shakiness. The 8800 has a magnesium body and comes in at about a pound and a half. Very SLR-like. Also, the vibration reduction feature will really help with the kind of shooting I do. And the 10x optical zoom is awesome for a digital camera.

I haven't played with the 8800 so I don't have a good feel for how the swivel monitor works. I hope it has as much freedom as the 995 did. It's hard to tell from the pictures.

Have you had the chance to pick one up and play with it?

The CCD and the lens look really impressive, and I think the shutter lag time is probably much improved. The 8800 looks like a really good camera, I just would hate to see that one feature dissapear. It made "creative" pictures so effortless. I bet fewer than half of my digital pictures with the 995 are taken at eye level. Most are probably taken at waist level. A groin's eye view of the world.

One more thing to mention is the 'street-cred' this bad boy will give me. It looks 'pro'. UT once suggested I get an offshore light for that, but this sum'bitch don't need no light!

I'll just have to squeeze my dick until after Xmas, when the price will go down about $100-150, or the 8900 makes its debut.

Back to film for awhile...
