50 year war.
Bush made comment a couple of weeks ago saying that this "war on terrorism" might last 50 years, now i personally don't think it'll take 50 years to decimate Al QUeda, and waht interst is it to the US if Basque Sepratists blow up cars? I think its more Orwellian. "War is Peace". External war is internal peace. The cold war gave the US a nicely defined enemy, the evil communist Russia, and war helps band nationalistic sentiment (look recently). Obviously Russia has gone away, now mabye the Government sees this whole Terrorism thing as a good chance to make a new big enemy to use as a scapegoat for passing laws etc, in the same way the Cold War was. Opinoins?

That's certainly what I thought.
I think that our government, our people, and our economy were looking for a nice, good war to spur things on. Problem is, against what? You can't really have a "war on ignorance" and start shooting stupid people (although there are some days I would enjoy seeing that :^)), so you need a real enemy. "Terrorism" isn't perfect, but it's better than anything we've had so far, and gives us the added bonus of giving us our pick of people to shoot at. First the Taliban, then Al Queda, and OBL is always in the background as the evil mastermind who wants to take over the worl. Who's next? The IRA? Those twits in the American south who want to start the Civil War back up? (If I see one more redneck in a beat up pickup truck with a confederate flag in his back window, I might have to shoot 'im.) Maybe we can go after some teenage street punks with extreme prejudice. Maybe we can teach our school children to tell their teachers when their parents are saying bad things about America. Maybe I'm getting a little paranoid. How many licks does it take to get to the center a juicy conspiracy? :-) |

In each individual's own world, they are at the center of everything, and are always morally correct. Noone thinks to themselves, "I'm going to deceive the American public. I want them to have an 'enemy', so that they will not question me." They think, "I am patriotic. I love my country, and I must defend it from this new enemy at all costs". The Orwellian stuff is just a consequence. |

It is notable how high Bush's approval rating has continued to soar, and I don't think that's due to his economic planning. I don't think this is a case of being deceptive though. What was done in response and continues to be done is popualar. Besides since the majority of Americans are for it shouldn't it be done? Majority rules and all? The fact that he's making a point of scoring popularity points is just politics.

You know what, it is drawing to an end. Daschle is drawing Bush's head out of the anti-terrorism cloud and back to domestic-policy earth with the economy. And don't you know, Bush is starting to burn whatever capital he has with that high approval rating to bury Daschle and pass his (Bush's) stimulus package.
This makes me happy, because for a while, I was afraid I was not cynical enough to withstand this all-too-brief "era of good feelings". Now I know not to question my abilities. *plans to download pre-9/11 SNL skits of Will Ferrel as good ol' Goofy Dubya to celebrate. ~mike

I hope you learned that your cynism knows best. Anytime things go too well you should lean back, relax and start getting paranoid. Be glad, if the happy times are over the politicians will have a harder time taking away our rights. Not that many are left...
Remember, it's not paranoia if they really are after you.
