Aging Ballplayers
The Yankee contract talks with Derek Jeter are not going smoothly. They are in the same place the O's were when Ripken was still in the game. He is the team leader but his tools are diminished. He plays shortstop even though a move to third would be best for him and the team, which brings the whole A-Rod thing back up. I prefer to watch a mix of seasoned and younger pitchers and younger position players. Right now the Yanks are old and getting older in both departments, which means they will break down over the long season. The Yanks make so many trades that folks end up rooting for the laundry which isn't sustainable. So they have a couple guys Jeter and Rivera who are the faces of the franchise but both are heading into their twilight years without building suitable focus on the next generation. Someone like Cano should be the next face but continuing to acquire aging stars who over-shadow him keeps him out of the spot-light. At this point the Yankees can only keep a crowd by hitting home-runs and winning a lot of games because they've given up on connecting with the fans... [shrug] It is only sports though.

Building for the future isn't the Yankee way - They have been buying whatever they needed. This will bite them hard very soon. I think we are seeing some of that now.
