Drama In Our National Parks

On the very day I arrived at Cape Lookout to do some work for the park, I heard the chatter on the NPS radio; it sounded really scary. They were calling for the rescue hellicopter. Soon we were all kind of freaked out. The guy saved three kids but ended up drowning himself.

On the ride to RDU airport yesterday, I started thinking about those kids, about how they will incorporate the death of their uncle, the uncle who saved them, into their life story. It was all so bittersweet; I hope they don't blame themselves.

And this past Monday some windsurfer dude off Cape Hatteras just keeled over and flopped dead into the ocean. The same day up on the Blue Ridge Parkway, some guy cut off his own hand with a chainsaw and drove himself to the hospital; they were able to re-attach it.

Sure would have helped to have flotation devices.

A slice of life, only inside the parks. It goes with the hundreds of thousands of people that had a great time, except dropping their ice cream in the sand and a little sunburn.
