Seeing a Movie after a Long Time
I mean a really long time.
Friends of mine have "movie night." Not surprisingly, a bunch of people get together to watch a movie. There are no specific criteria for choosing the movies ... they can be old or recent. We've seen things like The Help, Steel Magnolias, Charade, The Tourist, Star Wars ... so the picks are kind of eclectic. One thing that they've been trying to do with the picks is make the movies more "dude friendly." So, this past week, we watched "Excalibur." I happen to love this movie, and I'm the one who brought it. I purchased it a couple of years ago, but hadn't gotten around to watching it. It's easily 15-20 years since I last watched it. I remember it being a fantastic movie. I have vivid memories of when their armor got all shiny, and it was all just awesomely beautiful. Now, I still think it's an awesome looking movie, but there was this moment when I suddenly realized that, in comparison to today's movies, it's nowhere near as cool looking. Now, a lot of movies, this isn't part of my impression ... I can watch The Great Escape without worrying about this. Or Planet of the Apes. Or Charade, or all of the Hitchcock movies ... And it's not just that Excalibur was visually driven ... there's more than enough story to support the couple of hours invested in watching it, along with the "hey, look who that is!" (Liam Neeson, Patrick Stewart, and that guy from Keeping Up Appearances whose name I can't remember) Has anybody else had this happen?

Oh yeah. Movies I once loved and watched after many years
and they fell flat. The Comittments- The Rutles (All You Need is Cash) - The Trouble with Angels - The only one that was still cool : Clash of the Titans.

Recently rewatched The Omen. I definitely saw it with different eyes. Peak moments like ***SPOILER ALERT*** Gregory Peck getting hung up on the iron fence by his bicep, the journalist losing head, etc were just as wonderful and terrible as ever, some things were new to me. I didn't remember the menace of the dogs, my rewatching made me think that Leslie Ann Warren played the first nanny; nope, Holly Palance. Lee Remick is as beautiful as ever.
It was a good movie back in the day, and it's still a good movie. As scary movies go, it holds its own even for a young viewer like SonofV. We discussed the difference between being startled and being scared. This one is still scary.

Oh, man! I used to have it bad for Lee Remick. Still do, actually.

I love the Trouble with Angels and Where Angels Go, Trouble Follows as much as ever. I watch them fairly regularly ... they are funny for me for two reasons, one is, of course, growing up Catholic, which makes them required viewing.
The second is living in the area where the films were made and being able to identify a lot of the locations. I especially like the ones in Where Angels Go, Trouble Follows ... They leave the school, drive for hours and hours and end up 5 minutes down the road. Then they ride another couple of days and ... spend the night at Germantown Academy, which is 10 minutes back down the road they just came up ...
