I'm afraid I'm either diabetic, hypoglycemic, or a hypochondriac
Some background: I'm 20yrs old and about 15lbs overweight, and have been overweight most of my life. The most I've ever weighed though was 30lbs over. I've never been very conscience about my diet until this past year. Before that I tended to be a binge eater, skipping meals and then over eating late at night to make up for the day, yes I know it doesn't really work that way. A few years ago my dad was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, his grandma also died from diabetes at a young age. My dad didn't change his habits and has now had to start taking oral medicine. Around this time last year I started to suspect that I might have a problem too because I started to become sensitive to my habit of skipping meals. I started to feel low energy, getting shaky and dizzy when I didn't eat regularly. So I tried to eat regularly and more healthy, but with my job at a restaurant it makes it difficult and I'm the type of person that hates taking breaks. I feel guilty even if I'm off the clock. I went to the doctor for those symptoms plus some others (sore glands, fever, falling asleep really easily) and found that I had been working my full time job being sick with mono. I still worked my full time job I just took the semester off of school. Even well after I should be recovered from my mono I still have the sensitivity to eating. It seems to be getting worse, I now try and eat about ever 4hrs and try to stay away from the sugars. If I don't, I start to feel sick. Then today I noticed another symptom of diabetes. Yesterday night when I urinated it seemed to smell really sweet (enough so that I noticed), but I thought it might just have to do with the bowl of honey nut cheerios I had grabbed for breakfast. Today, I've eaten nothing sweet and otherwise had some dark chocolate, and my urine smelled sweet again. That's when I remembered that its a possible symptom of diabetes. So I looked it up and several medical sites confirmed it. Does this all seem like a reasonable conclusion? That I have type 2 diabetes at the age of 20?!

Pretty - get tested.
It might not be diabetes. I have many of the symptoms of diabetes and all through my teens and twenties I was tested pretty much every time I went to the Doctors - regardless of what I had gone in there for! I'm not diabetic, the tests always came back negative. But it's a serious long term health condition. Wondering and worrying doesn't help to treat it. In this country some pharmacists will test you free of charge, you don't even have to have a GP appointment. Get it done chick, it's worth the time. |

Just have to ask, why are you bring this to an internet forum instead of a doctor?

Many people post medical worries/ complaints here as a sounding board, for advice, to get a rough idea if they have a valid complaint or are worrying over nothing. Morethanpretty has been carrying a big fear around with her. Posting here will let out some of the poison before a scary meeting with a professional, who might tell her something that changes her life from then on. |

I can't see this thread title without thinking:
"I'm afraid I'm either diabetic, hypoglycemic, or a cock" ...thanks UT.

Big relief, I think...
Doc thinks my fatigue is that I'm still suffering from the mono I got last year. Apparently I shouldn't have tried to tough it out. She took blood and is sending me to a Rheumatologist on the 22nd. The thing with eating, is just age catching up with me. My metabolism is changing enough that I am now more affected by my eating habits. Good thing I've already been working on changing them. Thank you all the for the responses.

I am so pleased to hear it!
Keep an eye on your diet (as in your food intake) and your mood, just for your own reassurance. A diet diary can help pick up things which fly under a doctor's radar. For the record, I don't. Telling you so I don't feel hypocritical. But I know sugar gives me a headache and I am very sensitive to caffeine. Also that I can lose weight on a high carb diet but it makes me very hungry. Learn about your own body and it will help. Again - glad you don't have a long term health condition. |
