Plasma HDTV vs other???

I have a chance to get a 50 inch LG Plasma HDTV for free. Well, it's a long story but I plan to do it but I am wondering if there any major drawbacks to Plasma. I read that they consume more power and some companies have stoped making them.

Will I promote global warming if I watch Iron Chef on this thing?

Take the free TV.

That being said, I think Plasma TVs have horribly over-saturated, Mescaline-influenced cartoon colors.

Edit: I have a larger rant on this point. Plasma TVs are the equivelant of stereos that have TOO MUCH bass and TOO MUCH treble--because the "performance" conscious consumer considers MORE too be "better" when in fact it sounds, or looks, like total crap to anyone with a greater than 12 year-old mentality. I love my Honda Odyssey, but I have the bass AND treble turned down to -3 (out of 9) on a STOCK stereo, just to get a "flat" sound. Flashy, in-your-face crap does not equal quality.

P.S. Plasma technology has a built in expiration date--not only do you know when it is going to die, you can graph how it's performance is guarantreed to decline over the years. Also, they are argued to suffer from burn-in problems. I figure that my TV spends about 50% of the time with the same satellite menus on-screen--I don't want even the hint of a possibility of burn-in!

The downfall of Plasmas.
Quote:
Likewise, tech historians may point to February 12, 2009 as the official fall of the plasma empire—even though new models have just been announced. That’s the day that Pioneer—arguable the maker of the best plasmas ever—announced its complete exit from the TV business and that Vizio—the number-three plasma retailer in the US—gave up on the tech in favor of LCD. That leaves just Panasonic, LG and Samsung defending the diminished borders of the once-great empire. (And the latter two are also the two largest makers of LCD panels in the world. Only Panasonic still stake its life on plasma.)

You might have issues if you live at high altitude.

But I would still take a free TV, whether it is plasma or LCD.

So plasma is on the way out? Sort of like the Betamax? I still see them I the stores, I guess they are going to have to try to keep this a secret till they can dump some more inventory.
