Broken laptop

Hey folks,

Here's the deal...I broke our Dell Latitude laptop last night. I accidentally stepped on it while it was closed and broke the screen...it has blood spots and looks like shattered glass, though the actual screen is not broken.

I called a place here in the St. Louis area, and quite frankly, I think they're misleading and fee-happy. I got one quote via e-mail from them, but it didn't include the labor. Then I called them and got a totally different quote...the high-end quote they gave me was almost as much as buying a refurbished laptop.

I know what I need here...I need a laptop screen for a Dell Latitude D610, which I know can be had for under $200. And I could probably put it on myself with a little bit of help. But if there is a place here in the St. Louis area that does good work for a reasonable rate, I'm willing to take it to them, because the computer could also use a new keyboard.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

I've ordered from this place several times, always with good results. They don't have your display in stock, but it's listed for $129.99, which suggests you get easily find one for under $200. And you can probably find disassembly instructions online somewhere so you can judge how hard it'll be to do it yourself.

Sycamore,

I've put a new screen on a Dell Latitude D610. It's not hard to do at all and will take you about 1-2 hours to do. You can get the screen on eBay for about $200, and get a good screwdriver set from Radio Shack for $15-$20 that will have all the bits you need.

Take my advice and get the 1400*1050 screen. You'll thank me later .

More responsible computer companies provide that information for free. Dell typically also provides an exploded diagrams. God save you if it was a Gateway.

TW,

I got the full instructions with the screen, and there are many places to get the info online. That's why Dell is #1, and Gateway is now one of the consumer brands of Acer (another company to avoid), while their old business division went Chapter 11 and is now in the process of liquidating.

I can even get free guides for installing Apple parts.

The Lovely MrsSycamore has to keep you away from the laptop. Isn't this the second one?

Nah...there's a small notch in the actual laptop screen from the past that I've mentioned. In this situation, the internals got fucked.
