9/18/2002: Tasteless fashion show

At Madrid's most important fashion show, models in one line wore execution-style hoods, nooses, and body-covering bandages, "carrying rosaries or crucifixes, they paraded - and stumbled - to the sounds of a man's voice saying the Lord's Prayer, followed by a woman panting erotically and iron bars screeching as they opened and closed."

They were rewarded with choruses of boos from the spectators.

Artists always push the limits.

Many were horrified at this video.

Like A Prayer
written by Madonna and Patrick Leonard
-------------------------
Life is a mystery, everyone must stand alone
I hear you call my name
And it feels like home

Chorus:

When you call my name it's like a little prayer
I'm down on my knees, I wanna take you there
In the midnight hour I can feel your power
Just like a prayer you know I'll take you there

I hear your voice, it's like an angel sighing
I have no choice, I hear your voice
Feels like flying
I close my eyes, Oh God I think I'm falling
Out of the sky, I close my eyes
Heaven help me

(chorus)

Like a child you whisper softly to me
You're in control just like a child
Now I'm dancing
It's like a dream, no end and no beginning
You're here with me, it's like a dream
Let the choir sing

(chorus)

Just like a prayer, your voice can take me there
Just like a muse to me, you are a mystery
Just like a dream, you are not what you seem
Just like a prayer, no choice your voice can take me there

Just like a prayer, I'll take you there
It's like a dream to me

Quote:
Controversy — not entirely unwanted — became Madonna's next companion. The title track to her 1989 album Like a Prayer reaped tremendous publicity by virtue of its highly contested music video, which featured a slip-clad Madonna dancing before burning crosses, kissing an African-American saint, and displaying spontaneous stigmata. The resulting outcry from religious groups prompted Pepsi to cancel its sponsorship of her tour and to pull the plug on a TV commercial starring the kinky video vixen. And what lesson did Madonna take away from this escapade? Scandal sells. She went on to employ similar promotional techniques to boost ticket sales for her 1990 Blonde Ambition tour, box office figures for the documentary Truth or Dare (1991), and sales of the X-rated Sex book and the similarly themed album Erotica (1992).

The UK newspaper The Mail features the first official picture from the Die Another Day video set.

As you can see in the picture Madonna is badly battered and bloody after being 'tortured' by prison officiers in the video.

Not to mention, Madonna's Sex book.

Free speech goes both ways. If you don't like it, you can say so ... or boo, as many did at the fashion show.

Hey! This is great. The audience gave their honest critique- of the performance/marketing. Not what the "artist" intended...well that's what it is man. Beg forgiveness all you want, claim youre misunderstood, but when its out there, its out there. Here is the Magritte image he garnered inspiration for his line and show.

Dont get me wrong, I enjoy some performance art, can appreciate others- Yet if you've ever endured a long evening of bad performance art...
Q: How many performance artist does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
A: I dunno, I left.

Maigritte and Delfin go to some length to demonstrate that surrealism and practicality don't mesh much.
