How long before ham goes bad?

The soup thread has reminded me that I was going to use leftover ham to make bean soup. However, I had forgotten about it for so long Im wondering if the ham is still good to use. Besides smell, is there any other way I can be sure it is still ok? (BTW - Its been in a baggie since Christmas....)

5 days is my maximum for well cooked meat. 2 or 3 for rare meat or fish. I don't think I'd eat month old frozen ham much less that shit.

I know. You see those shows of the hobos eating bad food and they never die.

Three days ! One day for fish or seafood or a week for those packaged deli slices like turkey.
