No more smoking!
I have decided to quit smoking when I am out of my last carton of cigarettes - probably around the first of the month. I really like to smoke - it calms me down and gives me something to do with my hands, but I NEED TO QUIT. We all know about the health effects, and its a damn expensive habit, too. Plus I want to start exercising more and right now I get out of breath just walking around the block. I'm going to get some nicorette to help me through the first few weeks or months. If anybody has any quit smoking tips, I'd love to hear about them.

I think the biggest thing that helped me was going on the zone diet at the same time. It did two things...1) Figuring out the diet and how to make it work for me took my total attention, so that I wasn't obsessing about cigarettes as much, and 2) The diet kept my blood sugar nicely leveled throughout the day, so that I didn't get nicotine cravings as much (I tended to smoke when I got hungry.)
I also lost two pounds that first month instead of gaining the 10 I usually did when I tried to quit before. I have been a quitter since...its been 10 years and I never think of going back. |

Don't buy any more.
Believe it or not, this is the hardest part for me. I live three miles from work, and one mile from a convenience store that's on the way to work. And, of course, it's the convenience store that has gas pumps, and really good milk. If it were just about the gas, I could pay at the pump and be done, but because they have milk in the store, and you have to go to the cigarette counter to pay for it, and the guys know my brand and just reach it down for me, well, it's tough. I don't want to try any of the stuff (lozenges, gum, etc), because I hear they taste awful, and I don't want to trade one addiction for another. I just have to not buy them. Or have no stress so I won't need to buy them, but that's not going to happen any time soon.

Heh! No stress! I'm feeling stressed out just at the thought of quitting. The idea of nicorette doesn't bother me, because I know it won't do the number on my lungs that smoking does.

Sam, if you can quit, it'll be a HUGE victory. Good luck.

Yah good luck Sam! I think if I get more hours in, get another job, I'll have less spare time, and less time to smoke. It will also help with the stress.

My mom smoked for 30yrs, she quit cold-turkey. That's not for everyone of course. Point is, if she can smoke from age 9 - 39 and quit, than anyone should be able too.
Cigarettes are evil though, I've never had a smoking habit (only had a few here and there while drinking) and I haven't had any since March, but I've been wanting one for months

Try to make that carton last as long as you possibly can. Try to go longer between each one. If possible, don't keep to a routine -do different things in a different order each day to try and break any "habit" smoking
How many do you currently smoke per day?

Depends - anywhere from half a pack to a full pack.

That's good .....in that if the amount you smoke is already variable, it's not a set pattern so it should be easier to manipulate. If you can/have willing, take time to note what happens on days when you smoke less vs days when you smoke more. Then try to adjust your routine so that more days are like your half-a-pack days.

I did almost 3 years ago and about 12 years ago (stopped for 7 years, then jim got me hooked again). It can be done, you just have to do it.

the first thing you need to do is to believe that you can quit. because you fucking CAN.
they make it sound like it's harder than getting off smack, but it fucking isnt. It's NOT that hard! don't fuck around with nicorette or the patch....they just keep you addicted to the physical part. and that's the easy part to get past. 3-5 days and you're over that. also, this "when i get done the cartons I have left" shit is piss poor. Quit this week.....sell what you have left. here's how: give yourself 7 days. on day one, no smokes before noon. on day two....no smokes till after lunch.....and eat lunch at 2 day 3.....no smokes till 4p day 5 no smokes till after dinner day 6 3 cigarettes for the day....whenever day 7 one cigarette and then keep the rest of the pack around for another week, but do NOT smoke any. If you keep them around, you wont feel panicky about not having any...but you'll know that you can get by without actually smoking. It WILL be a rough week....but only two more after ...that get easier, and you're done. this takes 3 weeks. thats all. dont be a pussy

Keep your smokes in the car so you have to get dressed and go out to get one.
Then park further away. ![]()

Is this the verb that short people use to describe what tall people do?
I guess so. My wife says "Can you reach that for me?" and I get it down for her, without her asking "Will you grab that for me?"
