Well, I'll go ahead and say goodbye to all of you now, then. Without antibiotics, I'd have been dead a couple of times over, and my kids' non-functioning immune systems ain't gonna fare too well either. Sayonara.

Reminds me of one of my favorite quotes..."It's impossible to make anything foolproof because fools are ingenious."
I think antibiotics still serve a vital purpose...without vancomycin in May, I might not have my left eye...or I might be dead. Doctors and parents just need to be careful with the damn things...you don't take them for colds, you always take all of them unless your doctor switches you to something else, etc. It's not rocket science, but some folks just don't really think about this shit. |

A recent study reveals that ancient tribes in Nubia, circa 350-500 AD, were taking medicinal doses of tetracycline, a powerful antibiotic in use today. The researchers believe they were most likely fermenting the tetracycline, which is produced by the soil bacteria streptomyces, in beer. Especially high amounts were found in the bones of those who had died young, such as the skull of a four-year-old, indicating that this wasn't an indifferent ingestion during the course of their daily diet, but rather something they were deliberately giving to those who were suffering from illness.
As UT is always saying, smart is not the same as wise, and I am convinced our current culture is the former. |
