Oct 25, 2010: Pastoral Dreamer

Pastoral Dreamer is a sculpture by David L Phelps, installed at the University of Oklahoma in Norman.
It looks like a triple life sized barefoot farm boy, dressed in denim, with his butt sunk in to the earth.

The first picture I saw wasn't very good, so I started searching for a better one. I hope you appreciate the shit I do for youze guys.
But I found was several pictures with different landscaping.

Come to find out, there was an artist's proof, and six copies, made of this work.

Phelps has made a lot of sculptures involving people, sometimes with props like boats, sinking into the earth.
You can check them out at his site.

Chthonic butt.

Nice.

I also discovered in my picture search, there are quite a few sculptures around the world, that feature human body parts, usually hands, coming out of the earth. I'd seen the one down in VA, near Washington DC, but there are others from Peru to Korea.

That's beautiful work, but I don't care for the 'sunken in the ground' presentation of it. Put the work on a concrete foundation, for heaven's sake.

Close your eyes, lie back and dream with your mid-body buried in the ground?

No.

Becoming one with the earth, is the point.
