Woodstock was not like this...
For the past 10 years there has been a 3-day "festival" or "rave" up in the coast range of mountains east of Eugene, OR, called "Where Life Begins" (WLB). Past events have drawn 4000+ young people from as far away as San Francisco and Montana. And yes, drugs and glow sticks and dancing and primitive camping conditions are part of the scene. Last year, the organizers of WLB were fined a few thousand $ for not complying with safety issues, so maybe the Lane County government was being cautious this year. In any case, by last Wednesday the organizers had not obtained the required permits, and the County went to Court seeking a Restraining Order. The event organizers kept publishing on FaceBook that the WLB would continue, except they would limit attendance to 2900, to avoid the need for the "large gathering permit", which apparently kicks in at gatherings of more than 3000. By yesterday (Friday) evening, law enforcement were blockading roads leading to the event, but said they would not interfere with those already inside the property... saying: “We don’t want to be a catalyst for making the (public safety) situation worse." My grandson's friend, Alex, makes something of a living being a DJ and working with bands in the "electronic music scene" around Portland. Alex agreed to be a DJ, and to help a couple of the bands get set up at this year's WLB. Today, we have just heard that the State and County law enforcements are stopping those leaving the event for drug and traffic violations, and have arrested and jailed the DJ's and band members on charges of contempt of court. I'm wondering if organizers are back in Portland counting their $ |
