Wordplay/help

I need a (brief) euphemism for someone who "saves it for the big day" -who doesn't give it all at practice/rehearsal but puts in a dazzling performance on the day.

please.

yes, you are doing my homework. there may be more.

A new euphemism or an existing one?

even the name of a (current-ish or way famous) celeb who was kinda crap then suddenly became awesome would do....

this kid was so lame inpractice his "racing" 50 breast time was 59 and he swam a 45 in comp, and his 25 free was variable 18-25 and he swam a 15 in comp

light under a bushel kind of thing. but something preteens would get

Sounds like you could call him a "Fashionably Late Bloomer" or "The Wait-For-It Kid." If the youngster is otherwise cool, you could give him a cool name like "The Surge." Most words for the behavior you describe; however, have negative connotations like "holdout." No celebs come to mind for having a "pulls it out when it counts" reputation.

A+.

All went down well. But my co-coach embarrassed me by going too far and almost picking on kids I think she was pissed that I vetoed some of her ideas that alluded to kids' physical appearances. I just don't think that's OK. Especially not with preteen girls who are large and so splash more water out of the pool than average when the dive in or touch. Color me a wussy tree-hugging hippie if you must.

Good call Monstah.

I was going to suggest something like "slacker" or "could be good if he'd put in the effort regularly", but decided against it, for much the same reasons.
