Sandwiches

50 sandwiches, 50 states is the title but it's 51 with DC.

Quote:
Pennsylvania: Roast Pork With Broccoli Rabe

Although the cheesesteak is knocked off in every state, a hot roast pork sandwich remains Philly’s own. The place to get it is Tommy DiNic’s, a fourth-generation sandwich shop at the Reading Terminal Market, and you must order it with broccoli rabe and provolone. Unwrap the sandwich’s white-paper swaddling, and behold a foot-long monster glistening with grease and jus from the meat. A layer of melted sharp cheese gilds the inside of the roll, while the slight bitterness of its generous vegetable crown cuts the fat in each bite.

Of course I had to look up Maine's sandwich to see if they got it right. It interested me that they went for the lobster roll from Red's Eats. Not a bad choice. I've had one there. They are very good. Probably the best. But it's a sandwich for the tourists. It's too expensive for the locals to eat more than once every couple years. To be fair, I suppose Zagat's is for the tourists.

The real Maine sandwich is a Sam's Italian. They gave Connecticut and Rhode Island similar sandwiches, but they are both different from the Sam's variety.

Cleveland isn't really Ohio, it's like a whole other country.

Iowa got loose meat sammiches, and I almost expected it for OH considering the little moneymaker Maid-rite in Greenville. Then I looked up maidrite and got the corporation and they're all over Iowa, and the only one mentioned for OH is a place in a gas station that I don't think even sells them anymore. There just isn't a place like the original.

Research doesn't help too much with the franchises vs the original in Greenville. Here's a little site that explains the original maid-rite though.

I suspect the maid-rite franchises throughout the Midwest are a lot like North Carolina claiming 'First in Flight.' You were a location, all right, Kittyhawk, but you ain't the Wright Brothers themselves.

My "state's sandwich", grilled salmon, is delicious. They've taken some poetic license with their descriptions, but the main event is wholly justified. I had lunch with my Mom at a restaurant in Pike's Place Market on Mother's Day, but not at the Market Grill. The sandwich looks yummy, I'll keep it in mind on my next trip down there.

I wondered if there might be some monetary compensation involved in choosing particular locations, ... but the sandwich descriptions are interesting anyway.

Kentucky - The Hot Brown

Over the years I've heard about the Hot Brown. I've never seen one. I've asked about them at a few places, never found a place that serves them. Also, and this one's a kicker, I've asked and asked, and I don't know anyone who's ever eaten one, and very, very few who knew what I was talking about.

Maybe a Louisville thing, but it definitely does not represent KY.
