A few days ago, a few friends and I were walking down the Ave (University Way). As we approached my appartement, a very drunk guy came up to us and asked "50 cent please?" to which I unthinkingly replied "No thank you" and kept walking.

He, however, turned around and asked "No Thank You!?! What the hell is that?! No Thank You!?!" and he continued to ask us for "Just fifty cent to make a phone call!".

We kept walking, and he walked with us, using a variety of requests. As we were walking, I pulled out my pockets to demonstrate that I didn't have any money. (Erm -- I realized as I was doing this that I had five dollars in one pocket, but I clenched that in the other hand). Eventually, at the end of the block, he gave up on asking us for 'fifty cent'.

After we were on the other side of the street, Josie bellowed cheerfully in his direction: "Maerry Christmas!" .

I hope everyone enjoys their holiday-of-choice celebrations.

I will be off for Christmas Eve, and working Christmas Day.

The holiday has, however, gotten off to quite the interesting start.

My last case of the night involved police bringing in a woman named Mary, who was very, very (9 months and change) pregnant, and also very, very psychotic.

She said she was just trying to make her way home, but encountered the officers on the way, and so they brought her to the nuthouse (where else do you bring a 9+ months pregnant woman named Mary on Christmas Eve?)

So, she refuses to talk to me, but was quite charmed by our evaluating doctor, and was at least marginally agreeable to being evaluated, but not to staying in the hospital.

When she talked to our doctor, she reported that she was having contractions.

After the doctor came back into the office and told me this, I looked up at the security monitor and found myself asking, "Hey, what's that on the floor in room one? That wasn't wet before ... oh SHIT. I think her water just broke!!!"

Our ambulance transported her to the medical hospital. As I pointed out to several people, "I don't know nuthin' 'bout birthin' no babies."

If three wise men show up looking for her, I'm heading for the hills and not coming back.

Thankfully, I do not work in Bethlehem.

My children arrived for Christmas today. I get them until Sunday morning. I'm trying to get out of work early today, since I have Christmas, Friday and Saturday off. I can't take Sunday off, since I'm the only one here after 7pm until 9pm on Sundays.

Meantime, to each of you I wish a Happy Holiday, whatever you celebrate.

Take care and be well.

Blessings to you all.

Since I'm the new guy, I was selected to be the last warm body out of here today (the place is rapidly becoming deserted, but we still have crews out). As the new guy, I also did not enjoy the gift cards and bonuses that were available to the longer-term folks, but I did receive a very nice ham and a killer BBQ luncheon yesterday.

When I do get to leave (and it will be earlier than normal, I'm certain), it will be back to the hospital for another night. Sometime tomorrow afternoon I'll get to go home after Stephen's mother shows up to do her shifts. The wife and I will probably go have Chinese and then to see LOTR-TROTK tomorrow evening. We have found that theaters are not very crowded on Xmas Day for some reason. Christians...what are you gonna do?

Stephen's shunt re-revision surgery is likely to be moved back from Friday, as he was just diagnosed with a staph infection of his scalp. As a result, they may actually totally remove his existing shunt, already externally plumbed, and install a "temporary" shunt until the real one can be emplaced after the infection clears. I don't really know what this will entail, and likely won't find out for a day or two due to the holiday.

It could be a better holiday season, but it could also have been much worse. I am thankful for having a coherent and relatively normal son (at present), a loving wife and family, a new and somewhat promising job, and a lot of wonderful friends and associates.

I am proud to include all of you Cellarites amongst the latter, and so I would like to wish you all the best of the season. Be safe, be happy and be well!

Beer and movies sure sounds good ... I'll have to make do with movies and people with beer breath ...

I'll be heading off to the nuthouse in a bit, am just trying to get a few things together, emergency present in case the ambulanceboi gives me something this year, fudge for sharing, toys for playing (Gameboy Advance SP, people, with SuperMario Advance 2 and the new Mario/Luigi Superstar game) in case there aren't many nuts.

I'm also gathering some things for one of my patients that I go to see a couple of times a year ... Christmas, her birthday, and her "i've not been hospitalized for a year" anniversary. She gets a carton of cigarettes each time. (one per year for the staying out of the hospital anniversary. 2004 will be the first time that she will get TWO cartons on that date, so it's a pretty big deal for all of us, assuming she doesn't get committed before then). No, I don't usually go around giving stuff to clients directly, nor do I usually visit them in the wild. This is kind of a special case ... she's like our mascot. She has family, but has minimal contact, and we've all kind of adopted her, including her intensive case manager, her probation officer (she's actually off probation at this point, but the PO is still in touch), a couple of local cops, and several of the crisis workers.

Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays from a rather cold Atlanta, today. I hope everyone got to spend time with family and friends. I'll raise a glass of 43 for you all.

Cheers.
