Anyone program their own video games??

Hello all

I'm looking to create an interactive video simulation as a class project. Basically a video game that has some industrial use for training and demonstrating the real world effects of variations in the manufacturing process.

There are many 3d game engines available for doing this type of project . On the cheap side is the 3d game studio ( $100 ) and the high end the pro version of the 3d studio max ($3500 ). 3ds max does have a student edition but I would like to be able to distribute this and other projects in the future.

Does any one here create their own sims or games? What game engine do you use? How does it compare to the 2 I listed? What software do you craft your models from?

There are specific forums that speak to gaming but I would like to see if there are any regulars here that are fluent before I seek advice from them.

Thanks

Yes, I'm sure there are. Does anyone know the specs on a good one to save me some time?

Have you made a game with this engine? Can I dload it? What are it's limitations? Can I distribute without royalties?

so Slang, I guess by the vast silence your answer is no. Of course, to be sure you might have to wait a decade to see if a latecomer will post something good.

I found another forum that deals only with gaming development issues but they arent nearly as fun and get annoyed if you dont stay on topic. and

They dont like reading the word fuck either.

That limits my potential involvement there.

Gah! I saw something about Interactive Fiction Engines just the other day. I could swear it was on Slashdot, but I can't find it now. Anyone else remember seeing this? Not sure it's what you're looking for, Slang, but it might serve a purpose.

Come to think of it, IF would be a really cool way to test students after training. Load it up, tell them that if they can beat the game, they pass.

I found what I was looking for.

There are several game engines available, some of them are free but the 3d game studio has an impressive overall package with what I consider to be a good price.

The modeler package from Gamespace is not cheap but offers some high end solid model features that are also familiar to me from using UG. It seems that solid models from the gaming software and the engineering and design software have more in common than I thought.

So the 15 years spent creating and managing solid models and surfaces, meshes, etc will actually be helpful with creating games.
