That would be a lot cooler if the funny pages were still printed in cheap ink that lifted off.
I think the world changed, and not for the better, when USA Today started the trend of printing in color. Civilization actually ended the day the NY Times went color. It was bad enough in the insert sections ... I remember the first color ads in the Arts and Entertainment section. I was horrified when they put color on the front page. (Yes, I was a regular reader of the Old Gray Lady.)

If I remember right (and I may not, because it's been years since I've manipulated any of this absurd pliable matter), Silly Putty pretty much holds it's shape at room temperature. If that's indeed the case, then something like this would be entertaining for forming disposable sculptures. It's like sculpture-based Etch-a-Sketch. Of course with a lump this big, gravity is a consideration.
If it's shape-retention is as high as I remember, then I'd actually be tempted to buy a blob of this stuff for occasional sculpting. If a shape emerged from the putty which is worth preserving, I'd simply snap a few digital photos before clearing the canvas. I could have a whole website dedicated to my silly putty sculptures! If I had the spare time, I'd SO buy a wad of this stuff.

If anyone picks up some, let me know how well it holds up. I have a couple tins of "Thinking Putty", but it goes gooey really quick. Its like oobleck in that the more force you apply to it, the more it tends to tear or shatter. That aspect is kind of fun, because if you put a blob on the ceiling, it will, over the course of 15 minutes or so, slowly ooze and drip down onto the unsuspecting person below. |

crayola makes a modeling putty that hardens within a few hours. I used to have a beautiful red dragon atop my monitor that jinx made me out of it. some dickhead broke the wing off of it. if you keep it sealed against air, it stays pliable. comes in lots of different colors, too. not just 'flesh' tone or white like silly putty. and i dont think silly putty holds it's shape all that well, hp.

My memories of silly putty include that it is a very slow moving liquid although technically a solid.
Kind of like a non-edible peanut butter. Well, not really, but that was the first analogy that occured to me, so I'll just post it anyway.

Yeah.... silly putty doesn't hold its shape at all (at room temp). Slow moving liquid is a good description.

I once mashed silly putty, play-dough and a tub of that nickelodeon slime into a jar. I don't know what I was thinking, but the three components were never without each other ever again. It was just ... sticky. And gross.

i don't have 5 pounds of it, but i do have ablob on silly putty on the edge of my desk. i change the design about once a week and it has actually become kind of a joke with some of my clients. now that i think about it, it is a really lame joke and i should probably shut down my practice and move out of town, the shame weighs heavily upon me.
