subthreading

I was thinking, what cellar needs (and maybe just forums in general) is a way of having 'subthreads' in a reasonably designed manner.

I'll do an ascii explanation, hyphens are posts

-----------------------------------------------

Think of each thread as a tree with branches. Thus we someone brings up a a tangent you can reply to that tangent, thus helping keeping cohesion in the thread as a whole while allowing people to discuss side issues. Maybe limit it to one 'layer' to make it easier to follow. A threaded view, but something better designed than the slashdot way of executing it which tends to be very hard to follow and poorly laid out.

I'm going to play with this for another project, see if I can find a way to make it easy to understand and follow, I've got a few ideas. If I can, would there be much interest here in maybe making a vb version and giving it a test? Or am I creating a solution looking for a problem? Obviously sandbox it first and work out the bugs but when it gets to a fairly polished point, testing it from a usability standpoint.

look at the blue title bar above the first post in this thread. click display modes. change it to threaded mode. is that what you mean? if someone replies to your post, it will come out branched as you describe.
