9/17/2004: More rescued squirrels

Three weeks ago we had a really baby squirrel rescued after hurricane Charley; now, the results of Frances. The wildlife center that is feeding these squirrels has rescued more than 300 of the baby buggers, all from nests destroyed by the winds. All will be sent back into the wild. (Where they'll be hit by the next 5 hurricanes...)

Seems kind of ironic since squirrel hunting is really big in the deep south!

Baby squirrels are really sweet to raise. They come to really like you and want to be near you all the time. When they are at the stage where they are pretty mobile but still dependent they love to jump from where ever they are into your hands. The couple I raised would jump from the bed into my hand (which I would swing like a tree branch) and then I'd toss them back on the bed for another go. They need the practice at leaping so it was fun for all of us.

Despite being a fan of cute furry animals, one must wonder ... why bother?

They are squirrels.

If they didn't survive the hurricane, so what? Isn't the wrath of nature part of nature's plan?

Oh, yeah, forgot ... bunch of dogooders get to feel better.

Had a friend who did animal rescue. Said squirrels were a challenge because not only do you need to feed them almost constantly but as there digestive tracks are very undeveloped you must message their little tummies to stimulate the bowel function, almost a 24 hour a day jop.

yuck

Got a letter from an Uncle this week. States he's very happy there is a good nut crop (acorn) this year and the squirrels are fat and sassy, because he might have to eat them this winter. Consider the dogooders as provisioners.

Not by the time they have hair and are as old as the ones above. They are pretty carefree then, just some milk and they also start to munch on otherstuff on their own.
