Confessions: music you are totally embarrassed to listen to but do so anyway

ABBA. The whole nine yards, I grew up on it, I love it, I admit it, I am a metrosexual but I think it is just wonderful pop.

Boy Bands. I don't play 'em, but I usually don't turn them off either.

Music many would expect me to be embarrassed to listen to, but I'm not1:

The Buffy Musical soundtrack
Babylon 5 soundtracks (both American and European)

1 perhaps I'm a bit defensive, though

The Monkees.

And in truth, I'm not embarrassed about it.

At all. Really.

And then there was my Metal Period. Lasted rather a long while.

I went to see Twisted Sister in concert. Because I wanted to.

With Dokken.

And I saw Cinderella. Twice.

I've developed a recent obsession with electronica, especially downtempo jazz/lounge stuff (Kruder and Dorfmeister, Peace Orchestra, Buddha Lounge) and the really poppy, catchy dance stuff (Alice DeeJay, DJ Sammy, Scooter, Ian Van Dahl). This might not embarrass most people, but the vast majority of my friends are hardcore punk/ska kids, emo kids (which means they used to be ska kids), and aging liberal hippy douches (my favorite kind of people). So to suddenly start grooving to the String Cheese Remix Project or the K&D Sessions gets me some serious weird looks. Reminds me of when I went through my pop stage (not really *popular* music, but poppy in style, like The Crabs or Ted Leo and the Pharmacists)...it's amazing how much value some people attach to what bands you listen to.

ABBA is totally mine as well... I love belting out the words to Fernando and Thank you for the Music. My signature ABBA specialty is my Waterloo dance.

Ditto ( cept for the metrosexual thing )

The most of all is "Take a Chance On Me" which happened to be playing in a relative's car as they picked me up from the house after a particularly nasty spell of domestic unrest.

That was 1979 and every time I hear that song, I can still smell the leather of the new car and I feel that same immense relief. During those 2 or 3 minutes that this song played, reality changed for me for the better.

Whether it's cool or not that song will always be with me.

While their mainstreams hits are, and always will, remain, well, hits, Queen's full repertoire was the soundtrack to my 'tween years. Nobody will deny that Under Pressure, Somebody to Love and other assorted headliners are fantastic songs - but I tend to get funny looks from people when I reveal that I own every last of their albums. Though Freddie Mercury remains a legend and Brian May is still kicking ass (or was, with his solo debut some years ago), I feel that Queen is - sadly - reduced to a type of one-hit wonder status in pop culture. So, I'm slightly embarassed to have a rather lengthy library of Queen songs on my iTunes. Sue me.

There ya go slang, we share that sentiment for that song. And also, in 78 this girl totally flirted with me by singing a verse of "Take A Chance on Me". Some stuff will never leave you...

Breakingnews, they are not surprised that you like Queen ... they are surprised that you like Queen and you are straight. This might explain your ongoing problems with the ladies. You haven't also complimented them on their footwear, have you?

Barry Manilow...the man can sing...and I've seen him twice (1981 and 1987). Also, the smooth jazz genre.
