Where does your tax money go?

Did my taxes online last night and found this litte gem:

Where Does Your Tax Money Go
Ever wonder where your tax dollars are spent each year? The table below provides a summary of government tax spending percentages applied to the tax you paid in.

Your Money Is Spent On -----Your Share ---- %
National Defense -------------$821.00------ 17%
Medicaid ---------------------$338.00 -------7%
Medicare --------------------$579.00 ------12%
Unemployment, Disability and Other Income $676.00 14%
Social Security --------------$1,110.00 ------23%
Interest Payments ------------$531.00 -------11%
Other Expenses ---------------$772.84 -------16%
Total Paid------------------- $4,827.84 -------100%

I contributed $821 to an illegal war this year and $1110 to something I'll never see. Go ME!

Hey, does anyone know if its possible to go about NOT contributing to Social Security? I've heard it can be done, but I don't know how. I'd much rather put that money in my Roth IRA account....

I think they allow you to stop contributing after your freshness date has expired.

If you don't want to contribute to social security, go to graduate school and get funding through a particular kind of grant... maybe it's an NIH grant, not sure. But you don't have to pay social security. My husband hasn't paid social security for ages because his salary comes out of one of these grants.

I know that scenario isn't feesible for everyone, but if you don't want to pay it.... there's one way!

Many times state employees can pay into a retirement fund of their own and avoid social security taxes. What annoys me is that money earmarked "social security" actually goes for all sorts of other government spending. It's like the government wants us to believe all that money is going to the old folks, but actually it's just going to some Senator's favorate slush fund or the war in Iraq. Damned hypocrits!

$917 for medicare+medicaid, which is way more than I paid for insurance! Makes me wonder how much my employer is subsidizing...

Heh. The space program isn't even a large enough chunk of the budget to be listed here.

I'm sure it's one of those "other expenses".
