File indexing & BSOD

Ok I have never, I think posted anything like this here before. Yes It's a test!
I ran SFC /Scannow & got my 2K pro disk cleanup working. But I had some errors while it was working. I deleted the temp file & also the old index files. I had turned off indexing. Some how it was checked again on some drives. Then most of desktop icons were gone.
So I thought a reboot would fix, but then BSOD. So I tried the ERD. No go. I used an image to restore the C: drive, but most of my files were missing from D, E, F , G, & H. I restored all from bkup.
My question is, was there a way to recover the files, before I over "wrote" them? Because I lost some files that I had dnloaded, maybe a few bkmarks. Boy just to get this ART of backups down.
Any ideas about why disk clean up gave me craps, and why I couldn't get going again w/ERD? BB
