Its a small world / sureal life experence thing

Today I had a verry weird and strange thing happen , A maint. dude i am used to working with told me his grand father killed my grand father .

Some history here , my grand father grew up in the Carolinas it the 20's 30's (?) in a family of 12-14 ( storys varry ) My grand father and 2 of his brothers got tired of their father( a real ass from what i have been told ) , packed their shit in a wheel barrow or 2 and started walking west , my grand dad stoped in Forrest City Arkansas , the other 2 kept on , one stoped in Texas , and the other stoped in Cali.
My grand dad moved to west Memphis Arkansas and opened a saw mill , got married , had a few kids , life is good right , well one day he was working on the saw blade ( this was WAY befor the lock out / tag out days of today ) , some body was walking by said controll panel and said " why is this switch turned off ??" they turned it on and well ,,,,,,, i was with out a grand father .

Now go to today ,, i was working on this truck scale , maint dude helping me with the heavy lifting , and i was teaching him what to look for on a scale that doesn't work . Ideal chatter , and the subject of last names comes up , dude froze when i mentioned my last name , then he asked " was -------------- your grand father ??" I said Yes , and did he have a saw mill at one point , again Yes , in this city and about this year , YES and he got all somber and told me HIS grand father was the man that flipped that switch that killed him . He was SOOOO apolijetic .
I just sat there dumbfounded for a sec ,,

He said his grand father had ALWAYS regreated doing it becauce he liked his boss ( my grand dad ) .

we talked and both came to the realization that that was LONG ago , and by gones were , well just that ,,,,,,,, long gone .

Weird strange story I know . i just thought i would pass it on .

It really must have moved him, for him to remember all the details like the name and the location and everything.

I woudn't know what to say. That would be so frikkin weird. It's like you have this connection, but it's horrible in a way.

My mom is a Hatfield (or was). Yes the Hatfield/McCoy type. Her relatives were actually involved in this stupid argument. I have met McCoys in my travels and at least one of them said his relatives were on "the other side". It's a strange feeling, and part of me wanted to revive the feud for reasons unknown.I'm not really sure what the whole damn thing was about or how it ended, as I've heard many versions. My mom was always hushhush about it. I guess I wanted to kill the McCoy out of instinctive anger. But its true. Long time ago. Let it go. McCoy probably wanted to kill me too, and didn't know why.
Cool story ZippyT.

Amazing. I can't imagine how that would impact the other guys granddad. It must have changed everything about how he lived his life.

This is truly a unique tale. All those years separating the incident and the two of you...

Whoa, that is so wild.

OK #1 piece of unsolicited advice: If I were you, I wouldn't hire him. Nothing personal, just don't do it, we like you around here.

#2. As Steven Wright says, "It's a small world, but I still wouldn't want to paint it."

That is so friggin twilight zone.

I agree with Griff. It must have had a profound effect on that guy and his children...and grandchildren.
There was bound to be people in town that suspected foul play and people who would never forgive him. Not necessarily your family either, but others. If they didn't move there would always be uncomfortable moments.
My sister was killed in a car accident at 14. The 15 yo driver lived a mile away from my folks on the same road then built a house a third of a mile away. That's always been tough on my mother.
Anyway, it must have had a profound effect on your family too. Was one of the sons old enough to take over the mill?

Bruce , i had heard rumors of foul play and mentioned these to dude , this why his grand dad kept bringing it up and rembered the details so well , explaining it OVER and OVER to so many folks over the years , and no the family sold out and got out of the saw mill biz .

Foot , i just work with him every now and then , and I have for years , hell he is one of the maint dudes I look forward to working with , good dude , hard worker,,,,,,

Zippy, I think what Bruce said is pretty right on. Sometimes I make light to cover up a feeling of not really knowing how to say what I'm feeling.

I know that kind of heaviness can keep going through generations, like the McCoy posted earlier. But, even if it weren't an accident (I think it must have been, considering that people just don't get away with murder as often as they might hope) it doesn't mean the grandson would automatically be a bad egg.

Not to say that there aren't "infamous" families, but I think they are rare.
