Cellar moving

The Cellar is in the process of moving to a new server, but if you're reading this, you can feel free to post new messages and they won't get lost or deleted.

(Earlier today I had a tag line saying that we were moving and don't post or your post may be gone.)

There is some kind of slowness on the old network... this is temporary.

I did something kinda tricky, for those interested. Both the old site on the old server, and the new site on the new server, are using the same database on the new server. We wait for the rest of the net to update the DNS information for cellar.org, which will take up to a week. So you may be browsing it at the old location, but the actual CONTENT for the Cellar comes from the new server!

Everyone is now browsing from the new server actually. I forgot that I set the TTL (Time-To-Live) of the domain to 5 minutes in preparation for the move. You are now browsing from Ambler, PA.

This also means BTW that the security problems that we have had are probably in the past. The new server is set up with far better security. Unless there's a trojan I don't know about -- famous last words and all that.

Thanks to all y'all who made the new server possible with the tip jar. You know who you are. See how fast the connection is now? It's better!

Next time I'm at the co-location room, I'll take a picture of it for everyone to enjoy.

The new setup has more disk space than the old, and more and more people have broadband. So I've upped the max filesize on image attachments to 150 kb.

Converting the old location into a nursery?

Smooth move, Sir.

So we can now start that high-quality members nude self portraits thread?

Anyway, congratulations. Any comment on the nursery rumor?

Damn, I've got to go on a diet to get down to 150 kb.

Hardware is a 1U rack-mount server from Supermicro, with a Pentium 2500, a nice Seagate drive, 1GB of memory. It has this bag-ass fan cooling the thin heat sink in the 1U configuration. I have three of these machines in this space, and so far so good. I like how they are in someone else's room because they are LOUD

Software is Linux, Red Hat Fedora, the latest and greatest, all updated.

Was the shift as smooth as it seemed?

The way these things work right now, you can either put in the admin time to plan a smooth move,...

...or you can boldly pull the plug in location A, march everything over to location B, plug it in, configure it, and wait the day or two while the net picks up the changes. (During which the whole thing may be unavailable.)

I had lost sysadmin honor earlier by allowing the old compromised machine to be a security risk. I felt it was important to regain that honor by making this transition as smooth as silk. I believe that things are now karmically put right. I want some level of pride in a job done well.

Will we be able to get instant email notification now?

You must have disabled it because I haven't gotten the first email from the Cellar since the transition. It does seem to run smoother and faster now.

Great job UT! Thanks

Seems to be working now.

Thanks a million.

When the Cellar isn't working right on my machine it's worse than most anything that could happen.

Yes, I guess I am a Cellarholic.

Notification was working, but your ISP was bouncing it because it appeared to be from apache at localhost.localdomain. (Everyone else's ISP seems to have just let it through)

Now it's from apache at cellar.org, which is better.
