Interesting.
I thought they just went BWOOOOONNNNNNNGGG!!!!! That sound he made with the little tiny gong-bonger has been in every deep sea movie moment ever. Now I know how they do that. I still want him to hit it with a great big Conan-sized gong-bonger, and swing for the cheap seats.
