The Glamorization of Alcohol Thread
Friday is coming. What is in the blender, glass, snifter, bottle, puddle around the tallboy...? Actually I started this cuz Jinx mentioned a cosmopolitan, which I never heard of apparently because I never saw Sex in the City.
Cosmopolitan A modern classic that won a world wide appreciation after the tv series Sex In The City. 2 parts (lemon infused) vodka 1 part Cointreau 2-3 parts cranberry juice (squeezed lemon or lime) Stir or shake with ice and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a slice of lemon. The debate on weather to stir or shake a Cosmo is on. The stirrers claim that stirring produces a clearer drink while the shakers claim that all fruit juice martinis should be shook. Another controversy is whether to use lemon or lime flavoured vodka in a Cosmopolitan. As weather to add or not to add squeezed lemon or lime. Some claim it will be too sour, others like it like that. Some even like their Cosmo mixed with Absolut Kurant. However. We have tried all variations. And we like them all. Try your own blend of a Cosmo, and remember that drink mixing will never be an exact science.

I have longed for a "signature" mixed drink, one that I can order and seem sophisticated.
Until then, I'm a Double Shot of Jack with a Beer Back Woman.

I usually order vodka tonic with a twist of lime, with Grey Goose being the preferred vodka. I like it because it's pleasant without being sweet, and it manages the balance between "fru-fru" and "something my dad would drink". It's reasonably classy looking, but the lime gives it an impish quality, and the fact that it's generally served in a double old-fashioned means I never have to worry about it showing up in some goofy gimmick glass.

For me, it's either a vodka martini, obscenely dry, olive garnish, or any J. Random Single-Malt, depending on my mood. If I'm going to the wet bar to make drinks for friends and I, though, it's all about the white russians. Easy to make, and still quite tasty, even with cheaper liquors.

This weekend's stupidity will be fueled primary by Dewar's and Coke or, if I end up at a bar, Long Islands.

Absolut is by far the best vodka. There's a bar down the road from me serving over 200 different types of vodka and I still prefer that (ok so I haven't tried all 200 types but you get the idea).
My favourite drinks are, in a somewhat particular order: a glass of good vintage Rioja, a nice Merlot, real ale (NOT lager or poncy branded beer), a nice dry Pinot Grigio or Soave, fruity cocktails like sex on the beach and pina colada (the cheesy bit had to come out somewhere), a fresh strong Bombay Sapphire gin and tonic. I can't stand guinness, bacardi or whiskey (although I like the idea of drinking whiskey by the fire. I don't know, it just seems to fit). Oh and Absinthe is the work of the devil.

Uh, I never much liked Stoli, I think it's in large part thanks to a string of "bad" experiences with it in college. I'm not a big fan of flavoured vodkas either, though the "Van Gogh" chocolate-flavoured vodka makes a really unique screwdriver. Definitely worth at least one try.

"Modern Drunkard Magazine"
What a ridiculously brilliant name for a magazine. I have no idea if we make Absinthe in this country, I certainly didn't make it myself, and I wouldn't bother spending vast sums importing legitimate poison - just drink a tank of petrol. I haven't tried Grey Goose - don't know if they have it over here but will look out for it. Although I generally don't like the taste of vodka - think I prefer Absolut only because it's more... simple. Yes that's the word. Oh and I have a professional interest in their advertising, which is outstanding. Tut. Fed by the hand that bites me.
