				May 1st. MayDay

May 1st is a day of special significance for the labour movement. Its a day of worldwide solidarity. A time to remember past struggles and demonstrate our hope for a better future. A day to remember that an injury to one is an injury to all. But why Mayday? What is its history? Over a century ago the American Federation of Labour adopted a historic resolution which asserted that "eight hours shall constitute a legal days labour from and after May 1st, 1886". All across America in the months prior to this resolution, workers in their thousands were starting to struggle for a shorter week. Skilled and unskilled, men and women, black and white, immigrant and native were all fighting together. Chicago was the main centre of agitation. Over 300 000 workers came out on May 1st. It was here that Mayday was born. happy workers day. |

Springtime's come and Beltane's struck Yippee, Pagans, time to fuck! Yay! Beltane is in a three-way tie as our coven's favorite (read: best attended) Sabbat. We are expecting 70 people today in the park on a very cool, very windy (but very sunny) day here in the heartland. Better than last year, when it was overcast, cool and windy, and we ended up the day with sleet. Better than two years ago when it was muggy and warm, and we ended up the day with an unprecedented number of tornadoes here in the KC area. We are doing a handfasting, a dedication and two baby blessings today, plus the ever popular Maypole (we have a "portable" Maypole, all 9' of it, with 60 ribbons). Burgers and weenies afterward...

So, what the hell happened to that idea of an 8 hour workday?? I've had more than one job where my shifts lasted over 10 hours. |

The Commies (claimed to be) for the common worker. The Republicans hate the Commies. Anything that helps the common worker must be Commie. The Republicans remove worker protections.

Nah, to get into politics that matter, I'd have to move out of DC in order to be voted back into DC. Plus, I'd probably have to cut my hair. But of my four statements, only the third is subjective rather than fact, and wolf demonstrated that that attitude is at least prevalent enough to parody.
