April 20, 2009: Beach Sand

Discover has a series of pictures of beach sand.
The variation in shape and color are amazing by themselves, but Discover also describes how the different grains were created, where and what from.

I was not surprised that some sand comes from rock, but some comes from sea critters and some from pollution.

So if you poop on a cruise ship, you get immortalized on a beach?

We don't need recipes for sand -just time travel. The ancients in Mesa Verde and environs used sandstone to grind their corn, so it was a part of pretty much every meal.

The only good way to eat this is to put it in capsules and swallow it whole. The flavor is not bad but the texture sucks.

Srsly, tho... great IoTD. Very interesting.
