I had a nice time. It was a small turnout this year: younger bro and family go to Michigan, oldest of the grown nieces lives in LA (state not city) with her AF husband and new baby, dad had the flu

but my other grown niece and three nephews were there, and my nephew's fiance who is in school to be a PA and we LOVE her, and two neighbor kids who idolize my older brother and their family (such nice kids!) and sis-in-law's mom and sis, who I really like. Oh, and miracle dog...sweetest choco lab ever. We ate, played some games, and laughed. The little girl played left/right/center with sissy law, neph fiance, mom, and me...and she took all our quarters! She's so shy, it was really fun watching her win. I'm thankful for friends, family, and the Cellar, which is a bit of both.

I turned on the TV and A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving was on. So I have to post this part, with the lovely music of Vince Guaraldi.

I had my dinner from Subway sitting at the old sewage lagoon. Now's the time to remember from Big Sarge, "Never take family for granted or you end up all alone watching the sunset and floating turds."

			'Twas a happy T-day indeed.

Turkey breast for just the two of us, two kinds of stuffing because I insisted (second batch came out pretty wet; rather too much broth I reckon) of cornbread and sage-&-bread, salad, fresh green beans cooked waterless with slivered almonds, gravy that I eventually reduced to some success but think I need more whole-bird drippings to really get right, rather than starting from chicken stock and roux (successful roux, though); whole cranberry sauce and the jellied too, can-shape and all (and more cans waiting); the pièce de résistance was lemon meringue pie as given in the Most Recent Recipe Thread in Food & Drink, this time with a gingersnap crust in place of a graham-cracker one. The turkey breast might have been the p-d-r if it hadn't come out a bit dry and slightly shrunken. Cook those things covered, it seems, and perhaps from thawed not frozen. Wasn't sure what I had going on. Oh yes, and the garlic mashed potatoes, from scratch -- considerable more garlic next time, lightly sautéed 'em in EVOO, quite good. Even the black kitties got some turkey breast each.

The equally iconic pumpkin pie (fairly often a traditional autumnal dish because the punkins have ripened by about then and keep unrefrigerated for a time) is baked of smallish sweet pumpkins, such as the Sugarbaby variety, and is nearly as savory as sweet, with its spice mix. The large carving pumpkins are far blander and would only suit for, oh, soup or something. Hardly anyone does, though. I like to spice pumpkin pie filling (pumpkin, sugar, eggs, evaporated milk, or substitute sweetened condensed milk for the sugar and evap-milk, for a custardy sort of filling) with cloves or somewhat less allspice, nutmeg, and mace. The addition of mace does a lot for its depth. Topping it with whipped cream is okay, but rather gilding the lily. Serving it à la mode, however, is not.
