Anyone up with illustrator?

I'm trying to do something I know can be done, I'm just damne dif I know how.

I have a simple solid shape which i want to add a little cell shading to. The shape has a fairly thick black outline so the shading shape has to sit betwen the outline and the color I guess but I'm damned if I know how you do this, any ideas?

Is there an illustrator newsgroup? You can learn amazing things there. I have ilustrator on CD somewhere...to intimidated to even install it...course if I did it for my wife I could buy one of those sketchpad thingies.

I know vector work conceptually fairly well and I've done plenty of stuff in there before but this is the firist I've really tried doing cell shading work and it's shitting me up the wall. I've even seen pictures of what I need to do in tutorials WITH NO EXPLANATION OF HOW THAT WORKS. Very frustrating.

I'll go hunting.
