Clearly you don't live in North America. To appreciate how much Americans now see enemies everywhere, understand that the White House faxes the day's talking points to Rush Limbaugh and hundreds of lesser talk hosts. Rush then proclaims he is independent and can see how smart George Jr is because George Jr wants to ....

To inspire Brown Shirts, the neocons have hundreds of 'independent' talk show hosts preaching their message of the day. They tell us what to think - never bother to tell us why, what, or provide the numbers. Brown Shirts don't need underlying facts. To appreciate why 'big dic' thinking - this need to bomb everyone into submission - is so entrenched in America, learn what Rush Limbaugh does every day. Learn how many listen to outright lies and therefore believed Saddam had WMD and Saddam was complicit in 11 September. If outside America, then you don't understand how many in America now want to blow everyone back into their world perspectives. Rush Limbaugh 'propaganda' is now on the radio just like a world in the book '1984'.

mmm..... one other thought strikes me...

'Rush' is ...... not usually considered....... as a 'normal/usual' forename.... unless, of coure, the parents were in a ...... (sorry, strike that thought)... but, discounting that thought, would you not consider that parents who named their offsprng 'Rush' might be a tad off the mark....

Of course, there is no reason to think this condition might be hereditory...

Alternate to tw's explanation (although this is a little like trying to argue with an extremely intelligent, stubbornly self-satisfied brick wall):

Rush came along when it became apparent that the standard sources of information were completely one-sided and had more to do with Democrat agendas than actual truth. He's not independent in the least. He's right-wing all the way. It's the left's media that wants to claim the "independent" label, even though it doesn't apply.

Anyway, Rush Limbaugh came along and took over AM radio, which was supposed to be a dying format, and millions of people finally heard someone saying what they were thinking themselves. Liberals can't stand the thought of anyone challenging them, so they've made it a major goal of their existence to discredit Rush and anyone else who passionately (and entertainingly) opposes them.

The result is a lot of cherry-picked, out-of-context quotations, some flatly made up, that are supposed to paint the picture of Limbaugh as a misogynist, racist, homophobic, etc. etc. etc. pig. Plus, he's fat. And stinky.

No one wants to be associated with hateful people, so there's a big chunk of the population who parrots the liberal line on Rush without ever having listened to the show. So, from "I've never seen him act like this. He's either off his meds or acting", we get "Rush says Michael J Fox is faking his illness". We are not to critically analyze what was actually said, nor are we to hear the context. Rather, we just get angry that such a mean asshole is allowed to pollute the airwaves. Meanwhile, Air America files chapter 11. It's just not fair.

He's comically self-absorbed, pompous, and arrogant. That's his schtick. His political viewpoint is what keeps conservatives listening to him, and his insufferable inflated ego is what keeps him in the news and at the top of liberal hit lists. He's a shrewd cat. And filthy rich. And he believes every word he says.

And liberals can't effing stand it. I love him for that alone.

To me, the best way to describe Rush is all of the above as well as knowing that he USED to say that all drug addicts and pushers should be locked up, shot, etc. Until HE was caught having his house keeper pick up illegal prescription meds, for which he did NOT have a prescription, such as oxi contin. He was also found with prescription bottles of viagra with someone elses name on the bottles when he was returning from another country.

He had an addiction to painkillers, yes. Addicts are often in denial about their disease. Also, the name on the viagra was that of his doctor. I think he might have thought that his detractors were on the lookout for anything they could use to make him look foolish. I can't imagine where he got that idea.

Hardly damning evidence. And certainly less than ...

right-wing chestnut coming into play....

leaving a girl to drown in the river and going home to sleep, then using your family connections to cover your ass.

Liberals are best defined as a monolithic group, every last one of whom has left a girl to drown in the river and went home to sleep, then used their family connections to cover their asses.

Conservatives are best defined as a monolithic group, every last one of whom has ranted about stiff drug penalties before being busted as a junkie themsleves, and then using their money and fame to get off with a slap on the wrist.

In this way, the productive enterprise of American politics will best accomplish many important objectives.

Yup, made fun of him too. I didn't make fun of Rush because he's a republican, I made fun of him because he's a jerk. So is Kennedy.
But Rush is the one currently in the news due to his own actions.

It is so unfair. Rush is so charitable, never blowing things out of proportion, spinning things to put his targets in the worst possible light, or using endless hyperbole to cause as much political damage as he can.

You know why Rush always has that pained expression when he's really worked up? Its from the entire Republican Party having their hands up his ass to make him talk.
