Campaign Finance Reform

Quote:
IT'S ABOUT TIME FOR CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM... : Evidently, The President has had it with campaign spending. Today's Washington Post explains his position:
The (New York) Tribune reports that the President is convinced that the raising of campaign funds by popular subscription is an evil since a large share of the money is paid by individuals and corporations who expect favors in return.
Today's Washington Post worries that legislation won't do it. One problem is that the states control the elections. However, the Post says the public can clean things up, without the need for laws:
When the public reaches the point where it demands of campaign committees that they shall reveal the source of all contributions and account for every dollar of disbursements, there will be little need of legislation.
Wow, does that sound like Bush? It's not, it's Theodore Roosevelt. In a hundred years it's only gotten worse and the public more appathetic. Is there a way out of this madness that causes politicians to sell their souls for campaign funds? Was Teddy right with his solution? Is that the only possible solution?

Campaign Finance Reform is long over due. Neither party has the balls to do it.

With the SCOTUS decisions that money=speech and corporations=people, it's hard to think what sorts of campaign finance reforms are possible.

Congress is the problem here. Not Bush.

I guess the only solution is the same one Teddy talked about... you & me. The only way to clean up politics is from the bottom up.

As I get more experience through voting the more I realize how little control the general population has over who eventually gets elected.

I didn't say anything about Bush. The SCOTUS decisions were years ago.

I was confused by his comment too, but I think Merc is confusing SCOTUS with POTUS.
