The best free entertainment of one childhood summer was watching the lane being resurfaced about a mile and a half from this very spot.
Boiling bitumen first then truck loads of chippings followed by a heavy roller. Today that would require a full scale road closure but we watched proceedings just a few feet away from a mobile cauldron. Happy days!
