November 6, 2011 African Spurred Tortoise
![]() Third largest tortoise in the world. Largest mainland tortoise in the world. Females get up to 20" and males get up to 30". My son wants a tortoise. My uncle has several. My cousin used to raise them until a virus wiped out the 20 that he had. They are fascinating, in a weird sort of way. I think they make for an odd pet, but that is just my opinion. I love this image because it highlights so many geometric designs of nature. The face reminds me of an eagle with its beak-like mouth and flat nostrils.
