On-line photo storage

I know that Zippy uses Flickr, and there's Photobucket and Imageshack. Are they free? Is one better than the others? Is it a good idea to store photos on-line, anyway? I'm scanning my photos and want to share them with family in remote places, without burning a set of 20 to 25 disks for each of them, and thought an on-line service would be the answer. Dwellars, please give me counsel.
