State finds a Federal law that they find they cannot abide

State legislature creates opposing law

Federal forces intervene to enforce Federal law

State has emergency, feds refuse to release emergency funds without adherence to law, leaving state in desperation

State reinforces state citizenship, declares paycheck withholding monies to be state property and directs it to state

Feds announce articles of treason and arrest state officials who are under penalty of death

State renounces membership in the union with 90% support

State announces natural resources of state are its property and refuses to make deals with US-bound states

Another state needing those resources announces deal and combines borders with first state to co-reject feds

Other states vote to join first state as a matter of principle

Federal election swayed to the team opposing first state via the loss of missing states' electoral votes

Economic disruption leads to 25% unemployment and falling GDP for all, creating anger and resentment

"Remainer" states start increasing violence with "Exit" states as populist movements paint the Other side as scapegoat

Split causes wide panic as continent is threatened by outside nation as military is weakened and Exit states ponder agreement with that nation

"Total" war begins

States start sorting by politics, internal migrations make NY bluer PA redder NorthEast and West coast affiliate with Canada as reconstitution of British Empire begins. Pence presides over economic collapse of Gilead as food in Greater New Brittania becomes dear.
